fitness center

Wayne Schlock as project manager/architect at DMJM Rottet

This corporate fitness center is located in the basement of an office building. In order to give the illusion of higher ceilings, the exposed ceiling and floor were lit with direct/ indirect pendant lights whose repetition in regular intervals served to modulate the space.

In the dressing and shower areas, a datum line was struck providing a uniform limit for the heights of partitions, mirrors and lockers. This datum allowed for a continuous ceiling throughout the space, making the space seem bigger, the ceiling higher and improving the air circulation. Ductwork was located in soffits and locker bases to maximize the ceiling height. A muted color palette combined with natural woods and white Corian gave the locker area a spa like atmosphere.
